Sabre Raven EX guide: dampener range, loadout, and whether it is worth it
Applies to: Alpha 4.10.1 LIVE, build 12660092 · Researched:
The Sabre Raven EX occupies an aggressive, high-skill niche: it is a combat-first solo dampener. It is built for pilots who want to hold a target close and finish the fight themselves, pairing four Size 3 guns and four Size 3 missiles with a 2 km field that prevents nearby ships from jumping away. If controlling a wider area is the priority, the Guardian QI extends that field to 5 km, while the dedicated RSI Mantis reaches 12 km and can pull ships directly out of quantum.
The Raven EX is not a straight upgrade to the original Sabre Raven either. It trades the Raven's two EMPs and larger signature reduction for more guns, missiles, armor, and quantum dampening. They share a name and silhouette, but they do different jobs.

How the Sabre Raven EX dampener works
The Raven EX carries a Size 2 Vertine QD quantum dampener on a dedicated QED hardpoint. CIG draws a clear line between dampening and snaring: a dampener prevents a ship inside its field from entering quantum travel, while a snare pulls a ship out of quantum. The Raven EX cannot snare.
The Vertine QD covers 2 km. That is the same dampening range as the Cutlass Blue, shorter than the Guardian QI and Scorpius Antares at 5 km, and well inside the Mantis's 12 km field.
Treat 2 km as the outer wall, not the preferred fighting distance. Start the engagement inside it and leave yourself room to follow a target without dropping the field. Once the target moves beyond 2 km, it can begin spooling for QT again.
Stock loadout and what to change first
The stock loadout mixes two CF-337 Panther laser repeaters with two Omnisky IX laser cannons. Panthers fire at 1,480 m/s; the Omnisky IX fires at 1,184 m/s. The two projectile speeds are the first reason to consider changing the weapon fit.
| System | Stock equipment | What matters |
|---|---|---|
| Weapons | 2 × CF-337 Panther; 2 × Omnisky IX | Match all four guns if you prefer one projectile speed |
| Missiles | 4 × Size 3 Arrester III | Four medium missiles for the opening or a fleeing target |
| QED | Size 2 Vertine QD | 2 km dampener with a three-segment power draw |
| Shields | 2 × Size 1 AllStop, 6,336 HP total | Two generators split the shield pool |
| Powerplants | 2 × Regulus | Stock pair supplies the starting power setup |
| Quantum drive | Size 1 Beacon | Upgrade around route length and fuel use, not the QED |
The stock setup lists 525 combined alpha, about 1,017 sustained gun DPS, and 2,185 peak DPS, with 12,800 missile damage. That is a useful baseline, not a time-to-disable result, especially against armored targets.
Loadout recommendations
- Weapons: Start with the stock fit to see how the mixed projectile speeds affect your aim. If they get in the way, standardize all four hardpoints. Four matched repeaters give you one faster projectile speed, while four matched cannons give you one slower, harder-hitting volley. Choose the setup that lets you land shots consistently while holding the target inside the 2 km field.
- Quantum drive: The stock Beacon does not automatically need an upgrade. Replace it only if your routes or fuel requirements demand something different. For a closer look at those trade-offs, see the Star Citizen 4.10 quantum-drive guide.
The containment challenge
Flying the Raven EX as a solo interdictor means balancing dogfighting with strict positional control. You have to fly, fight, and keep the target inside the 2 km field at the same time.
The EX reaches 233 m/s in SCM, 1,320 m/s in NAV, and 560 m/s under forward boost. Do not spend that speed fighting at the edge of the field. Maintain a margin inside 2 km so one overshoot does not release the target. A fast light fighter can cross the boundary quickly; a larger target gives you more room to manage weapons and position.
The target does not have to destroy you to escape. It only has to slip outside the dampener's radius and create enough space to spool its quantum drive. At 2 km, you are not locking down an area so much as tethering yourself to the target's flight path. Holding a fast or agile ship inside that radius while landing shots is the Raven EX's central skill check, so prioritize pursuit and positioning over peak calculator DPS.
Raven EX vs. Raven, Mantis, Guardian QI, and Sabre
| Ship | Quantum-control range | Choose it for |
|---|---|---|
| Sabre Raven EX | 2 km dampener | Solo close-range pursuit with fighter firepower |
| Original Sabre Raven | EMPs instead of a dampener | Stealth-focused EMP play with 2 × Size 3 guns |
| RSI Mantis | 12 km dampener plus snare | Wide-area interdiction and pulling ships out of quantum |
| Mirai Guardian QI | 5 km dampener | Solo fighter control with more positional room |
| Base Sabre | No QED role | A Sabre fighter without the interdiction trade-off |
If you already own the original Raven, the EX does not make it obsolete. The Raven uses EMPs and has two Size 3 guns with no missiles; the EX uses quantum dampening and carries twice the gun count plus four Size 3 missiles. The original is also slightly faster, at 240 m/s SCM and 600 m/s forward boost, and has the larger signature reduction.
When deciding which ship belongs in your hangar, start with how you plan to use it. The RSI Mantis is the clear choice when the main job is controlling a wider area and pulling ships directly out of quantum. If you want a solo fighter with more breathing room around its target, the Mirai Guardian QI offers a useful middle ground. The Sabre Raven EX is for pilots willing to trade field size for firepower, pairing its close-range dampener with four Size 3 guns and four Size 3 missiles.
If quantum control is not a regular part of your plans, do not overlook the base Sabre. It offers the simpler, pure-fighter option without carrying a QED you may rarely use.
Understanding armor and stealth
The Raven EX's 13,116 aggregate hull figure is a sum across parts, not one health bar. The more useful numbers are 3,762 armor HP and 3,100 vital HP, alongside 25% physical and 40% energy reduction plus 20 physical and 16 energy deflection. These values describe its armor profile; they do not tell you how long the ship will last under sustained fire.
The EX has -28% modifiers across its electromagnetic (EM), infrared (IR), and cross-section (CS) signatures. That is a modifier, not a fixed detection distance. If signature reduction is the priority, the original Sabre Raven has the stronger -40% modifier.

Is the Sabre Raven EX worth it?
Choose the Raven EX if you:
- Enjoy aggressive solo pursuit and direct gunplay
- Can stay within 2 km of a maneuvering target while landing shots
- Want four Size 3 guns and four Size 3 missiles on a dampener ship
- Prefer quantum control to the original Raven's EMPs and stronger stealth
Choose another ship if your priority is:
- Pulling ships out of quantum or holding a wider area: take the Mantis
- A longer solo fighter dampener: compare the Guardian QI
- EMP play and the larger signature reduction: keep the original Raven
- A straightforward Sabre fighter without QED duties: use the base Sabre
The Raven EX is not a smaller Mantis. It is a close-range fighter that brings its own quantum lock, and its value depends on whether you can keep that lock attached while applying pressure.
