Problem

In Alpha 4.10.x LIVE, Star Citizen can crash to the desktop almost as soon as you do anything while Vulkan is selected on an Nvidia system using driver 616.56. The launcher may show 3221225477, the decimal form of Windows access-violation status 0xC0000005. That code describes how the process stopped; it does not prove the cause by itself.

Switch Vulkan to DirectX 11

Switch from Vulkan to DirectX 11 first. CIG recommends it for this exact crash, and two current Alpha 4.10 players reported that it stopped the CTDs. If the game crashes before you can open settings, force DirectX through user.cfg. Roll back driver 616.56 only if you need to keep Vulkan.

This removes the renderer involved in the crash without changing the system driver. It is CIG's current workaround, and two separate Alpha 4.10 reports—including one showing 3221225477—say the crashes stopped after the switch.

What to do

  1. Exit Star Citizen.
  2. Open the StarCitizen\LIVE installation folder.
  3. Open user.cfg in a text editor, or create it there if it does not exist.
  4. Add r.GraphicsRenderer = 0 on its own line and save the file.
  5. Launch Star Citizen again.

This keeps Star Citizen on DirectX 11 until you change the setting or remove the user.cfg override. It is supported recovery, not a guaranteed fix.

CIG also recommends returning from 616.56 to a previous driver. Several current players report that rollback stopped their Vulkan crashes, but one player still crashed afterward, so do not treat a specific older version as universal.

  2. Roll back to a previous stable Nvidia graphics driver using Nvidia's supported driver workflow.
