Workaround
Distant terrain does not render cleanly from inside a ship
Tracked since 18 Aug 2026 · Last researched 18 Aug 2026
Problem
Distant terrain or asteroids do not render cleanly when you look around from inside a ship: they can stretch into streaks even while the ship is stationary. Nearby cockpit geometry stays sharper, and the reported effect was not seen on foot.
This page applies when the smear is limited to the distant in-ship view. On-foot smearing, general low frame rate, shader compilation, server, or launcher problems are separate; later-hotfix and GPU scope remain unresolved.

Disable TSR for the affected view
Enter r.TSR=0 for the matching in-ship smear, then compare the same view; expect more shimmer or aliasing because temporal antialiasing is disabled.
Use r.TSR=0 only when the symptom matches this in-ship distant-terrain case. It removed the smear immediately in the observed case; the tradeoff is more shimmer or aliasing from losing temporal AA.
What to do
- Open the in-game console with ~.
- Enter r.TSR=0.
- Move the camera over the same distant terrain or asteroid field and compare the result.
No independent reproduction or later-hotfix confirmation was found.
What not to try
Do not treat native resolution without upscaling as the fix
Native 1440p without upscaling did not remove the smear in the observed case, so it is not a useful first move for this incident.
Do not switch renderer APIs as the fix
The effect remained on both Vulkan and DX11 in the observed comparison, with DX11 slightly worse. An API switch is not supported guidance for this case.
Do not use cache clearing or file verification as the demonstrated fix
Clearing shader caches and verifying files did not change the smear in the tested case, so do not spend time on them as this incident's fix.
