Game does not launch after switching to Vulkan
Tracked since 24 Sept 2026 · Last researched 24 Sept 2026
Problem
After changing Star Citizen from DirectX to Vulkan, the game may fail to launch before you can reopen graphics settings.
This leaves no in-game way to switch the renderer back. RSI's current Vulkan troubleshooting guidance provides a local configuration route back to DirectX 11.

Force DirectX 11 in user.cfg
Add r.GraphicsRenderer = 0 to the LIVE user.cfg file, then launch the game again. This is RSI's recommended first step for the post-switch Vulkan launch crash.
RSI specifically recommends this local override when Vulkan prevents the game from launching after a renderer change. One older exact-condition player report also says forcing the renderer back to zero restored launch.
What to do
- Exit Star Citizen if it is open.
- Open the StarCitizen\LIVE game folder.
- Find user.cfg, or create it as a plain-text file if it does not exist.
- Add r.GraphicsRenderer = 0 on its own line.
- Save user.cfg in the LIVE folder.
- Launch Star Citizen again.
This keeps the game on DirectX 11 while the line remains in user.cfg. It may not suit a setup that specifically needs Vulkan, and it is not a general fix for every Vulkan or numbered launch error.
Boundaries and evidence
Use this only when the launch crash began after you changed the renderer to Vulkan. Nvidia driver 616.56 crashes, Error 3221225477, Vulkan-1.dll or Easy Anti-Cheat errors, and Vulkan performance problems are separate cases.
The procedure is current official guidance, but the only independent success matching the exact post-switch lockout is from an older build and used the graphics settings file available at that time.
A 2026 player reported that the same renderer-zero setting did not solve a different numbered launch error, so a failed attempt is evidence to check the actual crash cause rather than repeat the override.
If the crash is tied to Nvidia driver 616.56 or Error 3221225477, use the separate Nvidia Vulkan crash guidance.
