Launch is blocked when EAC flags Vulkan-1.dll

Tracked since 24 Sept 2026 · Last researched 24 Sept 2026

Problem

Star Citizen cannot open when Easy Anti-Cheat identifies the installed system Vulkan-1.dll as an untrusted or flagged file.

RSI says some older Vulkan-1.dll versions installed with graphics drivers may be flagged. Its current first step is to update the graphics driver and Vulkan components supplied with it.

Best current action

Update your graphics driver and Vulkan first

Install the current driver package from your graphics-card manufacturer so its Vulkan components are updated, then try Star Citizen again. RSI currently recommends this step, and one player reported success before Alpha 4.10, but there is no Alpha 4.10.1 result or published success rate.

RSI links this EAC block to some older Vulkan-1.dll versions that may remain on the system and directs players to update both the graphics driver and Vulkan. One AMD player reported that a current driver repaired the problem in April 2026.

What to do

  1. Get the current driver package from the graphics-card manufacturer.
  2. Install the update so the driver-supplied Vulkan components are current, then try Star Citizen again.

This replaces the installed graphics driver and its Vulkan components. No source provides an Alpha 4.10.1 success rate.

Limited SupportLow riskThis is current RSI guidance, but it is not tied to a named Alpha 4.10.1 hotfix. The independent success predates Alpha 4.10.

Another option

If Star Citizen was set to Vulkan and the launch failure prevents you from reopening graphics settings

Force DirectX 11 if Vulkan settings lock you out

RSI provides this local override when a Vulkan-selected game cannot launch, allowing you to bypass Vulkan without reaching the in-game graphics menu.

What to do

  1. Exit Star Citizen.
  2. Open the StarCitizen\LIVE folder and open or create user.cfg.
  3. Add r.GraphicsRenderer = 0, save the file, and launch Star Citizen.

Star Citizen will use DirectX 11 while the override remains. This bypasses Vulkan; it does not prove that every EAC trust problem is resolved.

Limited SupportLow riskRSI still publishes this Vulkan launch-recovery route, but no exact Alpha 4.10.1 result was found for the EAC/Vulkan-1.dll block.

Diagnostic checks

These checks can identify the affected state, but they are not fixes.

Send diagnostic files to RSI Support if launch is still blocked

If the supported recovery steps do not restore launch, RSI asks for computer and crash information with a support request. A ticket helps escalation but does not restore access by itself.

What to check

  1. Collect the computer and crash information files requested by RSI Support.
  2. Attach them to a new RSI Support ticket and describe the Vulkan-1.dll EAC message.
Limited SupportLow riskThis is RSI's current escalation route for a Vulkan problem that remains unresolved after troubleshooting.

Other options

Enable Windows ASLR settings only as a fallback

RSI says some DLL-related EAC conflicts involve Windows security settings. It recommends enabling every ASLR system setting when the driver update does not settle that kind of conflict.

Steps

  1. Open Exploit protection from the Windows Start menu.
  2. Choose System settings and turn on every setting with ASLR in its name.
  3. Reboot the PC and try Star Citizen again.

This changes system-wide Windows exploit-protection settings and requires a reboot. No exact independent success was found for this incident.

Limited SupportLow To Medium riskThe procedure remains in RSI's current Vulkan guidance but has no Alpha 4.10.1 execution result or published success rate.

What's not worth trying

Do not download a loose Vulkan-1.dll

UnverifiedLow risk

RSI warns that downloading this system DLL from the Internet is unsafe. Use the graphics-card manufacturer's driver package instead.

Do not treat AMD 25.9.1 as a current fix

UnverifiedMedium risk

The 2025 rollback advice produced both success and failure reports, has no Alpha 4.10.1 validation, and conflicts with RSI's current direction to update the driver and Vulkan.

Do not add a standalone Vulkan package for this alone

UnverifiedMedium risk

Historical posts conflict and disagree over whether the package was a Vulkan SDK or runtime. RSI's current guidance for this EAC block is to update the graphics driver and Vulkan it supplies.

Boundaries and evidence

Use this page when Easy Anti-Cheat names an installed Vulkan-1.dll during launch. The Windows message that Vulkan-1.dll was not found, Easy Anti-Cheat Error 0, and the almost-immediate Nvidia 616.56 Vulkan crash are separate problems.

No exact Alpha 4.10.1 player result was found for any recovery step.

RSI does not publish the affected hardware, exact hotfix range, success rate, root cause proof, or fix date for this EAC/Vulkan-1.dll problem.

The newest exact player success is from April 2026 and does not name its Star Citizen build.

Older community reports often mix Vulkan-1.dll with other driver DLLs and disagree about rollback, EAC repair, and standalone Vulkan packages.

If the message is Error 0 or Code 0 without Vulkan-1.dll, use the separate Easy Anti-Cheat Error 0 guidance.

If the crash instead starts under Nvidia driver 616.56 and may show 3221225477, use the separate Nvidia Vulkan crash guidance.
